What is the difference between oil casing and tubing

2024.08.16

Oil casing and tubing play different roles in the process of oil drilling and production, and the differences between them are mainly reflected in the following aspects:

Purpose:

Oil casing: Mainly used to support the wall of oil and gas Wells, maintain wellbore stability and prevent wellbore collapse. It is the support to the well wall during drilling and after well completion to ensure the drilling process and the normal operation of the whole well after well completion.

Pipeline: Mainly used to transport crude oil and natural gas from the oil and gas reservoir to the surface after the completion of drilling, to withstand the pressure generated during the extraction process. It is a key pipeline that carries oil from the wellhead of an oil field to surface storage tanks.

Structure:

Oil casing: Due to the need to withstand greater weight and pressure, usually made of thicker steel, with some support structure to increase its stability.

Tubing: usually made of a light steel pipe, the surface is smooth, the structure is relatively simple.

Appearance:

Oil casing: relatively slender and cylindrical.

Tubing: looks relatively short, the upper part is cylindrical, the lower part is flat.

Materials:

Oil casing: The material is mainly steel, such as carbon steel, chromium molybdenum alloy and other high-strength materials.

Tubing: The material is generally steel pipe or steel-plastic composite pipe, with excellent acid and alkali corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.

Reusability:

Oil casing: It is a disposable consumption material and cannot be reused.

Tubing: May have the potential to be reused in certain circumstances, but is also generally considered a consumable.

Colors and markings:

In daily operation, for ease of distinction, the tubing is generally yellow, while the casing is green. In addition, on the side of the pipe will also be marked with tubing or casing words.

Consumption:

Oil casing: Due to its importance in drilling, its consumption accounts for more than 70% of all oil well tubing.

Tubing: Although also critical equipment, but its consumption is relatively low.

To sum up, oil casing and tubing have their own unique roles in the process of oil drilling and production, and they are clearly different in terms of use, structure, appearance, material, reusability, color and marking, and consumption.
